Structural Reforms in Europe: Policy Lessons from the Crisis

In the aftermath of the Global Financial Crisis and the Eurozone crisis, several European countries have stepped up their structural reform efforts, as evidenced by the track record of implementation of Country Specific Recommendations under the European Semester. Some have done so under the pressure of financial markets, others as part of a comprehensive adjustment programme. When are reforms successful in fostering productivity and long-term growth? When did they fail and why? This event aims to re-evaluate long-debated issues in the literature such as timing, sequencing, packaging of reforms, together with political economy considerations in light of the European experience.
