e-Skills International Conference: International Dimension and Impact of Globalisation

Location: Brussels, Belgium

26 March, 2014 - Hotel Crown Plaza, Brussels, BELGIUM

Organisations across the world are confronted with the challenge of tackling a growing e-skills gap. A recent EC study estimated a skills gap of up to 1.3M practitioners in Europe by 2020, and similar alarming predictions are being made in other regions. At the same time, the nature of demand for e-skills is undergoing significant change as a consequence of major trends such as:

  • The emergence of transformative technological trends such as cloud, mobile, big data and social computing;

  • The growth of globalisation and the emergence of global value chains, resulting in organisational workforces that are distributed across the world (a trend likely to impact SMEs as much as MNCs) as well as fundamental changes in the nature of work;

  • Shifts in the type of work that can be automated, encroaching on work that was previously undertaken by skilled ICT practitioners;

  • Growing awareness of the potential risks posed by inadequately skilled practitioners in a digitally-pervasive world, and the resultant need for ICT professionalism.

At the conference, we will be examining such trends in order to discuss the likely impact on the demand for e-skills, and how organisations, educators and policymakers can adapt to manage this change.

The conference will address the following key topics:

  • current landscape for e-skills and ICT professionalism both within Europe and in the larger global community;

  • impact of globalisation on the demand/supply of e-skills (including offshoring);

  • assessment of current e-skills policy actions in Europe;

  • proposals for international collaboration on e-skills and ICT professionalism;

  • policy recommendations for developing e-skills in a global context.
