The rise of "big data" – massive volumes of diverse data accumulating at an astonishing rate – and the proliferation of simple data analytics tools and software offer unprecedented opportunities for startups and entrepreneurs. These days, more often than not, data is at the heart of many startups, allowing companies to deliver powerful new products to customers, often built around innovative business models. Thanks to their dynamism and agility, young companies are uniquely placed to experiment with big data and develop the novel, innovative and creative data-driven solutions that will define success in the 21st century economy.

This high-level roundtable will explore data-driven business models being adopted by startups in Europe, and engage top policymakers and experts in a discussion on the way forward. The sessions will be intellectually underpinned by Data-Driven Startups in the 21st Century, a new research study to be launched at the high-level roundtable. The report explores opportunities along the big data value chain – from data collection and data analytics to data-driven business transformation – and examines key issues for actors seeking to excel in the data-driven economy, including access to skills and the regulatory environment. The high-level roundtable is hosted by the European Digital Forum, a think tank led by the Lisbon Council and Nesta. Its website is www.europeandigitalforum.eu.
