UNIDO hiring Managing Director of Programme Support and General Management Division

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) is the specialized agency of the United Nations that promotes industrial development for poverty reduction, inclusive globalization and environmental sustainability. The mandate of UNIDO is to promote and accelerate sustainable industrial development in developing countries and economies in transition. UNIDO draws on four mutually reinforcing categories of services: technical cooperation, analytical and policy advisory services, standard setting and compliance, and a convening function for knowledge transfer and networking. UNIDO focuses on three main thematic areas: Poverty reduction through productive activities; Trade capacity-building and Energy and environment. UNIDO ensures that its goals for economic transformation shall lead to Inclusive and Sustainable Industrial Development (ISID).

The Managing Director, Programme Support and General Management Division (PSM), reports to the Director General and supervises the branches and offices responsible for supporting the programmatic business of the organization. Through such central support services, she/he assists the Director General in the strategic positioning of UNIDO to achieve the following five pillars:

  • Strategy and direction of UNIDO in the framework of the post-2015 development agenda.

  • Meet the diversified demands of Member States at different stages of development.

  • Strengthen and expand partnerships.

  • Enhance the efficiency and effectiveness through optimized structure.

  • Motivate staff to their full potential.

Main Functions

  • Provide leadership to managers in organizational support services such as finance, human capital, materials asset management including procurement and information technology. Such support services enable the organization to deliver UNIDO’s mandate approved by the Member States for the post-2015 development agenda. Provide strategic guidance to the Director General on all aspects of alignment of support services to meet the demands for the post-2015 development agenda.

  • Design and implement strategic policies to support the implementation of technical cooperation delivery and other programmatic requirements. Following a consultative approach with other divisions, ensure that the work programme of the division is closely aligned to that of the others.

  • Provide strategic direction to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of the structure of the division to meet the demands for its services. Facilitate the services between headquarters and field offices to strengthen the efficiency of organizational operation and programme execution.

  • Support the Director General in other areas, to the extent they concern the division, such as the Programme for Change and Organizational Renewal (PCOR). Manage the division so as to ensure efficient distribution and coordination of actions; effective linkages; cross- functional team work; flow of communication lines and management information among different spans of controls.

  • Provide leadership to other Vienna-based Organizations (VBOs) on the efficient management of the common services falling under the responsibility of UNIDO.

  • Manage the overall resources of the division from a strategic level and be responsible for the collective results of the branches and offices in the division. Ensure that branch directors are good managers and motivators of people and hold them accountable for the management of the performance of staff in their respective branches and offices. Ensure appropriate controls for monitoring and reporting; performance management; motivation of staff and other appropriate measures to ensure optimal utilization of such resources. In the recruitment of staff in the division, support the Director General to reach the organizational goals for improving geographical and gender balance.

  • Support the Director General on other special projects and assignments that may be assigned from time to time.
