World Bank recruiting Senior Economist

Zagreb, Croatia, 11 July 2017

REGIONAL AND COUNTRY CONTEXT

The Country Director of the European Union Country Management Unit in Brussels is in charge of the operational engagement of the Bank in all 28 EU member states. The Bank's work program is most active in Bulgaria, Croatia, Poland, and Romania with engagements in several other countries. MFM's work program is diverse and includes macroeconomic, fiscal and structural reform dialogues based on CEMs, PFRs, spending reviews, policy notes, other economic reports, lending, and advisory services. There is an increasing emphasis on the Reimbursable Advisory Services-funded work. The regional economic work has been largely driven by the EU regular economic report, but the engagement is likely to increase and focus on working with the CMU on identifying and participating in relevant EU conversations and developing new business in which the Bank has competitive advantage.

The Macroeconomic & Fiscal Management Global Practice (MFM GP) is seeking an outstanding and dynamic Senior Economist with proven and strong macroeconomic, integrative and people management skills to be based in Zagreb. The Senior Economist will be in charge of macro monitoring for Croatia and Slovenia. This includes a production of Macro-Poverty Outlook twice a year, regular maintenance of the MFMod – a macroeconomic modelling tool of the MFM GP, regular briefs with the rating agencies, investors and international community on the economic situation in the country, and drafting economic briefs for the senior management. The Senior Economist will also participate in formulating and drafting the Country Partnership Strategy, providing comments on the other Bank lending and analytical products, and will lead teams on substantial cross-GP tasks in Croatia, including for the European Union Regular Economic Report.

The Senior Economist will also work to develop new business for the Practice – notably RAS and other Trust-Funded work. The Senior Economist will also have regional responsibilities related to helping brand the World Bank in the EU and helping identify and participate in relevant EU and IMF conversations together with the CMU and GMFDR.

The Senior Economist will be able to manage multiple demands and tasks while communicating smoothly within the Bank and with clients and demonstrating integrative skills across practices and throughout the World Bank Group. The Senior Economist will work very closely with the MFM Program Leader based in Brussels.

Note: If the selected candidate is a current Bank Group staff member with a Regular or Open-Ended appointment, s/he will retain his/her Regular or Open-Ended appointment. All others will be offered a 3 year term appointment.
