WHO recruiting Human Reproduction Team Coordinator

Background

The Department of Reproductive Health and Research (RHR) works to enable people to protect their own health as it relates to sexuality and reproduction and to receive quality health care in matters related to sexual and reproductive health. To achieve this, the Department advocates and promotes sound public health strategies, sets norms and standards, engages in technical cooperation activities, and supports research. RHR's overall strategic framework is provided by the WHO Global Reproductive Health Strategy approved by the 57th World Health Assembly in 2004. RHR includes the UNDP/UNFPA/UNICEF/WHO/World Bank Special Programme of Research, Development and Research Training in Human Reproduction (HRP). HRP is the main instrument within the United Nations system for promoting, conducting, evaluating and coordinating interdisciplinary research on sexual and reproductive health; for collaborating with countries in enhancing national capacities to conduct this research; for promoting and facilitating the use of research results in policy-making and planning for sexual and reproductive health care; and for the setting of standards and guidelines, including technical and ethical guidelines, in the field of sexual and reproductive health research. The Human Reproduction Team is responsible for RHR and HRP work in the fields of family planning/contraception (FP/C), sexually transmitted and reproductive tract infections and HIV linkages with sexual and reproductive health (STI/RTI/HIV), and infertility.

Description of duties

The responsibilities, will be to provide support to Director, RHR, in the following:

  • Overall management of the Human Reproduction Team, including scientific and technical activities and effective use of both human and other resources. Providing scientific and managerial supervision of the Team, ensuring compliance with approved policies, established ethical and scientific standards and good management practices, including financial management. Developing policy, strategy and programme budget proposals to the World Health Assembly (WHA), the Executive Board (EB), the Policy and Coordinating Committee (PCC), the Scientific and Technical Advisory Group (STAG) and the Standing Committee in the areas of family planning, sexually transmitted and reproductive tract infections, infertility and HIV linkages with sexual and reproductive health.

  • Coordination of research activities. Providing vision and developing and implementing research strategies in the area of work. Providing scientific and managerial supervision over research and development activities of the team, including research capability strengthening.

  • Assuring adequate publication in the scientific literature as well as other forms of dissemination of research results. Preparing technical progress reports on RHR's work in this area for governing and advisory bodies, WHO reporting requirements, and donors. Leading advocacy activities related to the work of the team, and provides input to broader advocacy and communications activities at the Department and Organization level.

  • Developing evidence-based clinical and managerial guidelines in the fields of family planning, sexually transmitted and reproductive tract infections, infertility and HIV linkages with sexual and reproductive health.

  • Leading WHO work in global monitoring and evaluation in the fields of family planning, sexually transmitted and reproductive tract infections, infertility and HIV linkages with sexual and reproductive health.

  • Establishing and maintaining working relationships with other agencies active in the field of research and the development of norms and tools. Interacting with all the related WHO programmes especially those at Headquarters and in Regional Offices. Interacting with other agencies and programmes (World Bank, UNFPA, UNAIDS, donors, UNICEF, UNDP etc.) for on-going and future programming activities, and possible collaboration Activities.

  • Coordination with industry and development of working relationships with all major companies engaged in research and product development active in the field. Collaboration with selected companies for drug research, development, approval and use in developing countries.

  • Undertaking fundraising activities for increased financial support for WHO's work in the field of family planning, sexually transmitted and reproductive tract infections, infertility and HIV linkages with sexual and reproductive health.

  • Coordinating the preparation, monitoring and implementation of the Department's budget sections relating to family planning, sexually transmitted and reproductive tract infections, infertility and HIV linkages with sexual and reproductive health, family planning, sexually transmitted and reproductive tract infections, infertility and HIV linkages with sexual and reproductive health to ensure that the Department's limited resources in this field are directed and redirected, to areas where need is greatest and where its activities can have the best impact. Coordination to ensure that budget implementation achieves maximum cooperation of the technical and scientific staff, so budget and planning systems become motivators not constraints, on the ability of staff to achieve the Department's objectives.

  • Overall management responsibility for approximately 15 Professional category staff and 3 General Service category staff, to ensure that management is, and is seen to be, both efficient and effective. Coordination of activities of the team with the evolving senior management guidelines, WHO functions, and other agencies and donors. Encouragement of a good management style and practice to ensure that the Team is healthy and productive, in that it can both achieve its objectives, and also provide a high level of work satisfaction, to every one of its members.
