UN DPA recruiting Political Affairs Officer

This post is located in the Iraq Team/Middle East and West Asia Division (MEWAD) of the Department of Political Affairs (DPA). The incumbent reports to the Iraq Team Leader/Senior Political Affairs Officer. Within delegated authority, the Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:

  • Supports the activities of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) including through the provision of technical and substantive backup in the implementation of the UNAMI mandate.

  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of political developments, in particular as they affect Iraq and its neighbours, and provides advice to UNAMI/UN agencies active on the ground.

  • Gathers, selects and analyses information contained in communications and publications received from UNAMI and other sources.

  • Drafts reports, meeting notes, code cables, briefing notes, talking points for senior UN officials, internal memoranda, and other communications on issues under his/her purview.

  • Attends Security Council, General Assembly, negotiating bodies, conferences, and meetings on Iraq and the region as required.

  • Maintains contacts with and monitors actions taken by other UN organizations, other international organizations, governments and non-governmental organizations on substantive, coordination and policy matters.

  • Serves as focal point for the integrated task force on Iraq.

  • Participates in fact-finding and other missions to Iraq as required.

  • Performs other related duties as required.

Contract duration: one year. Any further extension of the appointment is subject to the extension of the mandate and/or the availability of the funds.
