United Nations recruiting Media and Communication Specialist for 11 month assignment in New York

Rationale and context of the assignment

The Media section in the Division of Communication (DOC) requires consultancy services of a media specialist / Press Centre writer to support the work of United Nations’ overall Child Protection communication priorities and support to the United Nations Press Centre.

The Press Centre is the Media Section’s primary resource for journalists, enabling them to access the latest news reporting on issues related to children and United Nations’s work. All content published on the Press Centre is communicated to international media and United Nations’s communication professionals across the country offices for dissemination to local media.

The Media Section requires a consultant with excellent writing skills, a strong knowledge of development issues and children, child protection issues, sound news judgement, and understanding of the challenges of working in a UN agency, with attendant sensitivities around language and process.

Scope of Work

Under the guidance of the media chief, and in close collaboration with the Media Section, Digital Team within United Nations HQ’s Division of Communication, Child Protection Section and United Nations country offices, the consultant will draft and edit press materials and produce compelling copy for publication on and dissemination through the United Nations Press Centre.

Responsibilities

The consultant is required to work closely with the Media Section, Child Protection Section and Digital Team to provide support including:

  • Media planning and outreach on key Child Protection reports and “media moments’ and other media-related activities and events.

  • Liaise with United Nations Country Offices to identify human interest stories and conduct research as needed.

  • Manage the timely uploading of content on the Press Centre, if and when required, including weekends and evenings.

  • Coordinate daily with digital media team to cross link relevant communication materials, including press releases and statements, to appropriate United Nations web pages and channels.

  • Select appropriate communication materials to publish on the Press Centre Executive Director page.

  • Conduct regular comparative analyses of competitor press centre sites.

  • Consult with external media and the Digital Media team to implement changes that enhance usability and functionality of the Press Centre.

  • Support implementation of a social media strategy for the Press Centre in order to raise its digital profile.

  • Systematically update old content, and develop new, web-friendly content.

  • Track and report on all site metrics.

  • Support the wider media team when required.

Tangible and measurable outputs/deliverables of work assignment:

  • Write and edit press materials and releases, briefing notes, key messages, speeches and other communication materials for United Nations spokespersons.

  • Provide daily support to Media Section, Child Protection Section and Digital Team in DOC and Country Offices.

  • Provide research support to DOC and with relevant divisions in country offices and HQ.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and produce and edit content in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.

  • Attention to detail, editing skills and judgement.

  • Proven ability to build consensus and work effectively within a cross-departmental team.

  • Timely posting of press materials on the Press Centre.

  • This assignment requires daily work, including on weekends/evenings as and when required.

Contract duration: 11.5 months
