For the past 30 years, John Snow, Inc. (JSI) has provided high-quality technical and management assistance to public health programmes worldwide. At JSI we believe that the routine and systematic application of technology is vital to the success of public health initiatives and to meeting tomorrow’s public health challenges. We apply technologies in public health programmes to build more effective and efficient programmes, disseminate more actionable information, leverage and safeguard intellectual property, and improve data availability, quality, security, and use, enabling better decision making, better service delivery, and ultimately better health outcomes.

JSI’s new Applied Technology centre is designed to support the company’s numerous projects through the expert application of technology, while also fostering leadership and knowledge sharing among the global community of public health implementers and policymakers. The centre is responsible for linking JSI applied technology (AT) practices with project needs, and maintaining a steering committee of AT-savvy public health experts embedded within the JSI divisions. The centre facilitates JSI’s efforts both internally and externally to ensure that cutting edge technologies in the field of public health are employed in appropriate and effective ways. This work spans JSI’s entire portfolio of work, both domestically and internationally.


JSI seeks a Director to inaugurate our new Applied Technology centre. The Director will provide strategic leadership to establish the centre as a company-wide resource to steer and support the various AT initiatives currently operating at JSI and develop new ones. To advance JSI’s AT portfolio and ensure the quality of AT implementation across projects and divisions, the Director will work to ensure effective knowledge sharing, communication, and collaboration between our various technology initiatives, work with senior leadership to build new corporate processes to support the effective application of technology to public health programmes, and build a strong team comprised of new and existing JSI staff able to meet the organization’s current and future needs The Director will be responsible for creating and strengthening relationships with partners and donors and for building new business. The Director can be based in the JSI Washington, D.C. office or the JSI Boston office, and will work with a dispersed team across JSI’s US and global offices.

  • Provide strategic leadership for JSI in the Applied Technology realm, including organizational vision and plans for resource allocation and investment

  • Build and maintain a strong core AT team as well as a broader organizational community of practice

  • Manage centre resources and finances, including supervision of centre staff

  • Assure high quality implementation of AT activities on all JSI projects

  • Identify and pursue opportunities for new business and partnerships, and support new business development activities across all divisions of JSI

  • Define and promote the application of best practices in AT both internally and externally

  • Liaise with technology and public health partners and funders, creating effective formal and informal partnerships, influencing funder priorities, and raising JSI’s profile

  • Provide thought leadership on the effective application of technology to public health programmes through networking, publications, social media, and conference presentations
