International Development Organisation has an independent Research Advisory Group (RAG), whose primary aim is to provide independent scientific advice to the Department.

The provision of independent scientific advice by the RAG will help to assist the International Development Organisation Chief Scientific Adviser (who is also the Director of the Research and Evidence Division) to assure the quality and appropriateness of Research and Evidence Division’s research portfolio for International Development Organisation’s objectives.

The current RAG membership consists of 12 senior academics. The Group is chaired by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge.

  • Provide strategic advice on International Development Organisation’s research priorities and activities; and its relationship with the wider UK and international research and science base.

  • Discuss and advise on broader development issues, priorities and policies from a science and research perspective.

  • Help ensure International Development Organisation policies are informed by the best available scientific evidence.

  • Comment on the effectiveness and where appropriate the value for money of RED’s programmes and projects.

  • Provide advice on the balance, relevance and adequacy of research activities supporting Departmental objectives; and RAG will provide advice on areas that deserve more or less emphasis, including any gaps.

  • Provide advice on the development and delivery of International Development Organisation’s forward research portfolio and how it feeds into International Development Organisation’s thinking.

  • RAG will participate in horizon-scanning and long-range scenario planning exercises to help identify emerging challenges and opportunities for development research and assist in the development of options for responding.

  • Where necessary, RAG will provide advice on specialist expertise available in the research community that International Development Organisation could benefit from.

  • Provide advice on International Development Organisation’s communication of research findings and outputs.
